Masahiro Tanaka Reportedly Chooses Agent Casey Close, Pipe Dream of Joining #SFGiants Getting Pipeier
Masahiro Tanaka is going to be posted, and probably represented by agent of Excel Sports Management, Casey Close. Are you a Giants fan hoping the Giants will be the ones to sign with Tanaka and wondering what kind of inside track Giants players might have with Tanaka? Well, why don’t I show you a graph of how many players on the Giants have Casey Close as an agent in comparison with other teams, according to MLB Trade Rumors’ Agency Database:
Nobody heard that expletive you just let out. Well, maybe you didn’t say anything because you don’t know which player Mr. Close represents on the Yankees and Dodgers. For the Yankees, it’s Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter, maybe Tanaka’s heard of them. The Dodgers have Jamey Wright, whom they just signed to their bullpen. Ok, not bad. But, there’s also Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke to round out the three. Ok, now you probably let out that expletive. You’ve noticed the Giants don’t have anybody represented by Close, and within the Excel Sports Management, according to MLBTR, the only Giant that is a client of the agency is Brandon Belt.
But how much does that really matter? The answer to that is “I don’t know,” but you do look for every excuse to be positive. Would the Giants really sign Tanaka and move Ryan Vogelsong to the bullpen? Gosh, do I hope so. (Tim Lincecum is not going to get paid 2/$35 to pitch in the bullpen during the regular season.) Since every team gets their money back if they don’t sign Tanaka, every single team should be ponying up the $20MM just to kick the tires at least and see what Close is demanding for Tanaka. Should you expect the Giants to make a crazy contract offer to Tanaka? Nah, I don’t think so. Besides slowly building up the payroll, I’m not sure what signs point to the Giants bumping up the payroll $20MM/year for Mr. Masahiro. It’s fun to dream, though.
